Fauteuil aux Dragons

The Fauteuil aux Dragons or “dragons’ armchair” sold at auction in 2009 for €21,905,000… approximately $40,000,000 in US dollars today. The piece was created by Eileen Gray, an Irish designer and architect. The chair was originally light colored wood with white leather but had been refurbished by Yves Saint Laurent sometime in the late 1900s. The auction house had estimated the value at around €3,000,000 and were blown away by the actual price this piece fetched despite having been refinished and reupholstered. The purchaser, Cheska Vallois, had previously owned the chair from 1971 to 1973 when she had sold it to Yves Saint Laurent. Cheska described the purchase as “the price of desire”.
